Atlantic Bonito Fishing

A bonito caught with Captain Eric Stapelfeld on Hairball charters, a cape cod fishing charterLate July and August are some of the best times to fish for bonito in Nantucket Sound and Martha’s Vineyard. These fish are strong, as they are a member of the tuna family, and make fast line peeling runs. We often find them busting bait randomly between Martha’s Vineyard and the Elizabeth Islands, plus they are abundant out in the open ocean too.

Technique

Trolling with small Hairball Jigs and Yozuri swimming baits can produce days of over two dozen fish. Light tackle and flyrod enthusiasts will also enjoy chasing the bonito down in Vineyard Sound.

Catch Limit

Hairball Charters adheres to the NMSF tuna regulations on bonito – of which there is no size or possession limit.

On the Table

Bonito are tasty member of the tuna family. Their meat tastes something like a cross between bluefish and swordfish. Bonito is excellent for grilling.
