Falmouth sport fishing at its best

Falmouth sport fishing at its best

May is the beginning of Cape Cod’s fishing season. Striped bass and bluefish begin to show up in Vineyard Sound. Tourism hasn’t kicked into full swing yet, so it’s a great time to come fishing and enjoy the area. You can also take advantage of many of the hotels’ off-season rates.

You’ll catch so many stripers at this time of the year, that your arms will hurt! Large schools of stripers (also known as rockfish) are migrating north through Vineyard Sound, and they are hungry!

This is the time of year around Cape Cod when the striped bass fishing comes back to life as they feed on schools of squid, herring and mackerel. Mixed in with the stripers are a handfull of black sea bass.

May also sees bluefish feeding on squid in the warm shallows of Popponessett and Cotuit. They are also a good fighter – great for family trips and light tackle enthusiasts.

The waters around Falmouth are really thick with great game fish by May, and the weather is great.  Get out on the water early this year and catch the biggest striped bass you’re likely to see until fall comes around.  You’ll be glad you did!
